Film Program #1: Dis/Appearances

September 11 @ 6:00 pm

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required here

Dis/Appearances is an experimental short film and video program that explores the cinematic treatment of the wounded body. The title alludes both to the crucial figure of the disappeared and to the unearthing of rarely seen footage from the archives. The selection includes, among others, films and videos by Cristóbal León & Joaquín Cociña, Grupo Proceso, Angelina Vázquez, Claudia Aravena, Bettina Perut & Iván Osnovikoff, Eduardo Menz, and unseen raw footage from the day of the coup by Leonardo de la Barra.

This is the first in a series of six film programs titled “Archives for the Future.” The series seeks to reactivate, reappropriate, and repoliticize the cinematic memory of the Chilean coup. It establishes dialogues between works made throughout the last five decades at different historical moments—from the socialist years of Allende, to the dictatorship, post-dictatorship, and the estallido social or “social explosion” in 2019.

Programmed by José Miguel Palacios and Elizabeth Ramírez-Soto.

Reception to follow.
